Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department will begin working directly with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after the city’s sanctuary-city protections were revoked under new federal oversight. Border czar Tom Homan said that “when we encounter criminal illegal aliens, they’ll be turned over to ICE,” underscoring the administration’s intention to end local shielding of undocumented immigrants deemed criminal offenders. Police Chief Pamela Smith on Thursday signed an executive order permitting officers to share information with ICE during traffic stops and other encounters, even when individuals have not been detained or charged. The directive reverses earlier rules that limited cooperation and marks the most significant immigration-policy shift in the District in years. The move follows President Donald Trump’s decision earlier in the week to assume temporary control of the city’s police force and deploy roughly 800 National Guard troops as part of a broader crime-reduction initiative. Federal and local law-enforcement personnel are now patrolling the capital side by side. District officials in recent years had adopted several pro-immigrant measures, including restrictions on collaboration with federal immigration authorities and allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections. Homan said those policies will not apply while federal control remains in place, adding there is “no sanctuary” for undocumented immigrants who commit crimes in the capital. Spokespersons for Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Metropolitan Police Department and ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The policy change aligns with the Trump administration’s broader nationwide effort to expand deportations and tighten local-federal cooperation on immigration enforcement.
