President Donald Trump visited a U.S. Park Police facility in Washington on Aug. 21 and addressed hundreds of National Guard troops, federal agents and Metropolitan Police Department officers involved in his new “Making D.C. Safe and Clean Again” initiative. Trump thanked the assembled personnel, saying their efforts had produced “unprecedented” results within just four or five days. He claimed crime numbers are “way down,” describing the capital as “a different place” after years in which residents had avoided restaurants and other public spaces. While offering no specific statistics, the president said he had received numerous calls from residents and business owners praising the crackdown. Trump pledged that, with continued cooperation among local police, the National Guard and federal agencies, Washington would become “the best in the world.”
