Within hours of the statement, the Department of Health and Human Services said it had revoked a $12 million grant for California’s Personal Responsibility Education Program, which funds sex-education initiatives aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. HHS argued the curriculum promoted “radical gender ideology” that lies outside the program’s statutory mandate. Andrew Gradison, acting assistant secretary at HHS’s Administration for Children and Families, said the decision followed a 60-day deadline given in June for California to strip gender-identity lessons from its materials. The California Department of Public Health declined, contending the content is medically accurate and had previously been approved by federal officials. The state has 30 days to appeal. California receives roughly 8-10 percent of its K-12 funding from Washington.
