President Donald Trump said on 20 July that he may intervene in negotiations over a new Washington Commanders stadium if the National Football League team does not abandon its current name and restore the former Redskins moniker. Writing on his Truth Social account, Trump warned he would "put a restriction" on the deal to build a venue in Washington, D.C., unless “the original ‘Washington Redskins’” name is reinstated. The Commanders reached a preliminary agreement this year with the District of Columbia to construct a roughly $3.7 billion stadium on the site of RFK Stadium, with an opening targeted for the 2030 season. The franchise — valued by Forbes at about $6.3 billion and owned since 2023 by a group led by Josh Harris — moved its home games to suburban Landover, Maryland, in 1997 but wants to return to the city limits. Washington dropped the Redskins name and its Native American imagery in 2020 amid long-standing criticism that the branding was a racial slur. Indigenous rights organisations including the National Congress of American Indians have opposed reviving the name, while a smaller group, the Native American Guardian’s Association, supports its return. The club has repeatedly said it has no intention of reversing the change. Trump, who has limited formal authority over District affairs, extended his demand to Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians, urging that team to revert to “Indians.” Neither club has indicated it will heed the president’s calls, and legal specialists say any attempt by the White House to block local stadium approvals would almost certainly trigger a court fight.
