Separate videos circulated over the past week show federal immigration agents carrying out two high-profile arrests in the Los Angeles area. In the first, recorded outside a West Los Angeles residence on 26 June, masked Border Patrol agents took an Iranian man and woman who had requested asylum into custody. A witness, Pastor Ara Torosian, said one of the detainees collapsed during the encounter, prompting agents to summon emergency medical services. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security later confirmed the West L.A. operation, saying agents had "apprehended two Iranian nationals unlawfully present in the U.S., both flagged as subjects of national security interest." DHS added that the female detainee received hospital care and was discharged before both individuals were transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. A separate incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on 28 June in Pasadena, where video shows plain-clothes ICE agents detaining Rosalina Luna Vargas, a mother of two, on a public sidewalk. Bystanders repeatedly asked to see a warrant as Vargas’ children clung to her. Pasadena Police responded to a 911 call reporting a possible kidnapping, verified the agents’ identities and said they did not assist in the arrest. Police Chief Gene Harris confirmed that Vargas declined hospital treatment and was taken away by ICE after officers verified a warrant. Immigration lawyers and community advocates say the episodes reflect a broader escalation in enforcement actions against Iranians and other long-term U.S. residents. DHS announced the arrest of at least 11 Iranians on immigration violations nationwide during the same weekend, and the National Iranian American Council warned of what it called an indiscriminate "round-up" lacking clear links to security threats. DHS has not provided further detail on the national-security designations cited in the Los Angeles cases.
