U.S. Border Patrol agents set up outside a downtown Los Angeles venue on Thursday, Aug. 14, shortly before Governor Gavin Newsom was due to unveil his "Election Rigging Response Act," and detained at least one person suspected of being in the country illegally, according to video recorded by television crews at the scene. San Diego Sector Chief Greg Bovino, who oversaw recent workplace enforcement operations in the region, told reporters the deployment was designed to "make Los Angeles a safer place" and warned that agents would "go even harder" in the sanctuary-city jurisdiction. Local police assisted with crowd control, but no injuries were reported. Newsom, preparing to announce a Democratic counter-strategy to Republican redistricting efforts, condemned what he called a politically timed show of force. "Dozens and dozens of ICE agents" had been dispatched by "Donald Trump and his minions" to intimidate supporters, the governor said. "People are scared," he added. Appearing on Fox News, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the operation, saying each raid "is built on information" and targets "the worst of the worst." Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor the governor’s office provided additional details on the number of people taken into custody or whether further actions are planned.

"Do you think it's coincidental?" During a press conference about efforts to block GOP-led redistricting efforts in Texas, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said "Donald Trump and his minions" sent "dozens and dozens of ICE agents" outside of the event. https://t.co/cmX1lQuLpq https://t.co/7ojQJD1bYm
California Gov. Gavin Newsom: “People are scared. People are fearful. You had a United States Senator thrown down to the ground in a federal building, Alex Padilla. JD Vance, his name is Alex Padilla, not Jose Padilla. That’s the Vice President of the United States.” https://t.co/S8BP3zq1Le
