House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he is still evaluating whether to endorse Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor. Jeffries told CNN the campaign must show how its progressive proposals can be converted into “actual plans” that would work if Mamdani wins City Hall, adding that conversations with the candidate are continuing. Jeffries’s caution comes as a new Tulchin Research survey, conducted 7–14 August among 1,000 likely voters, shows a complicated electoral landscape. In a five-way field, Mamdani leads with 42% support, followed by Andrew Cuomo at 26%, Republican Curtis Sliwa at 17%, incumbent Eric Adams running as an independent at 9%, and lawyer Jim Walden at 3%. The same poll indicates that Mamdani would trail Cuomo 41% to 52% in a head-to-head contest, underscoring concerns among anti-Mamdani forces that a split field could hand the self-described socialist the November 4 election. Cuomo has said he will withdraw by 16 September if he is not leading, and some activists are pressuring Sliwa and Adams to make similar commitments to avoid further vote fragmentation. Jeffries’s eventual endorsement could influence consolidation efforts inside the Democratic Party, which remains divided over Mamdani’s calls for expansive social-welfare programs, police reforms and free public transit. For now, the city’s most prominent Democrat is keeping his options open while rivals debate whether to unite behind a single alternative.
