California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office has intensified its confrontations with former President Donald Trump, unleashing a series of all-capital-letter posts on X that replicate Trump’s signature online cadence. One message on Aug. 16 mocked a photograph of Trump meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska with the jab “TINY HANDS,” while boasting that Newsom had “stolen the cameras” through his recent redistricting proposals. The combative tone marks a notable shift in Newsom’s communications strategy and has attracted wide coverage. Fox News underscored the governor’s use of Trump-style rhetoric, and Breitbart on Aug. 17 accused Newsom of disparaging U.S. Marines and National Guard troops as “bringing war to the American people” during the federal deployment that quelled riots in Los Angeles earlier this year. Newsom’s heightened online profile arrives as speculation grows over the 2028 Democratic presidential field. A Gallup survey released this week shows the governor with a 30% favorable and 41% unfavorable rating among all voters—11 points underwater and trailing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 34%–38% reading. Prediction market Polymarket currently assigns Newsom a 19% probability of capturing the party’s 2028 nomination, ahead of Ocasio-Cortez at 13% and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at 8%.
