The incendiary remarks and the public burning of Islam’s holy book are likely to draw scrutiny under federal and state hate-crime statutes and could prompt backlash from civil-rights and interfaith groups. Gomez has not yet responded publicly to requests for comment, and major Republican officials in Texas have not issued statements on the video as of late Monday.
