The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, led by newly installed Chairman Paul Atkins, on 13 June rescinded the remaining cryptocurrency proposals advanced by former chair Gary Gensler, marking what Atkins described as “a new day” for the agency’s treatment of digital assets. As part of the overhaul, the SEC filled key leadership roles. Jamie Selway was appointed Director of the Division of Trading and Markets, while Brian Daly will head the Division of Investment Management. Reuters and legal trade publications said additional directors were named to units overseeing investment funds, stock exchanges and corporate accounting practices, giving Atkins a largely new senior team. Separately, Acting Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Caroline Pham said the CFTC would maintain strict oversight of digital-asset markets despite the Trump administration’s pro-growth stance. “There’s no easy street—pro-growth doesn’t mean you can lie, cheat or steal,” she warned, noting the agency has moved away from what she called “regulation by enforcement.” Pham said she aims to “Uber-ize” crypto by encouraging innovation while safeguarding investors, and observed that Bitcoin’s broad acceptance makes it difficult for policymakers to reverse course. Together, the SEC’s rule rollbacks and the CFTC’s enforcement posture signal that U.S. regulators intend to foster digital-asset growth without relaxing standards against fraud and market abuse.
