FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators have discovered a previously locked room inside the bureau’s J. Edgar Hoover Building that contained seven sealed burn bags and several hard drives tied to the FBI’s 2016-18 Trump–Russia investigation. Burn bags are government containers used to destroy classified material. Patel said the names of former senior officials, including James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, appeared on the recovered items. Patel disclosed the find while unveiling what he called a “Transparency Initiative” aimed at releasing long-classified Russiagate documents. He said the trove will be turned over to Congress and the public in stages to “de-weaponize the FBI” and restore credibility, promising “maximum accountability” for anyone who manipulated intelligence during the probe. The director also claimed his team located an email in which former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates instructed agents to shut down an inquiry into the Clinton Foundation. Patel accused past administrations of suppressing evidence for political reasons and said the bureau is “building a case for the American public,” although he did not specify whether the material will lead to prosecutions.
