House Oversight Subpoenas Epstein Estate for Birthday Book, Client Records
The U.S. House Oversight and Accountability Committee has subpoenaed the estate of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, demanding a broad set of unredacted records that include a leather-bound “birthday book” prepared for his 50th birthday, address and contact lists, flight logs, bank statements, video surveillance, and the 2008 non-prosecution agreement that shielded him from federal charges. The subpoena, signed by Chairman James Comer, was issued on 25 Aug 2025 and instructs the estate’s co-executors to produce the material by noon on 8 Sept 2025. Comer said the panel is examining potential mismanagement of prior federal investigations, the circumstances of Epstein’s 2019 jail death, and whether a network of sex-trafficking associates received improper protection. Committee staff also secured a voluntary, transcribed interview with former Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta—who negotiated the 2008 plea deal—scheduled for 19 Sept 2025. His appearance follows a first round of subpoenas to former attorneys general and other officials tied to earlier probes. Interest in the “birthday book” intensified after a Wall Street Journal report claimed it contained a bawdy letter signed by President Donald Trump. Trump has dismissed the account as “fake” and filed a defamation suit against the newspaper, while a lawyer for the estate said the executors will comply with lawful requests. The latest demand comes as the Justice Department begins turning over tens of thousands of pages from its own files. Democrats on the committee contend that most of the initial tranche was already public, signalling further partisan tension as lawmakers press for fuller disclosure of Epstein-related records.
