The US Justice Department on 22 August released the first tranche of documents from its Jeffrey Epstein investigation, posting redacted transcripts and audio of a two-day prison interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, the financier’s longtime associate. The move follows weeks of bipartisan pressure for greater transparency over the high-profile case. The 300-plus-page transcript covers questioning by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on 24–25 July at the Florida facility where Maxwell is serving a 20-year sex-trafficking sentence. Blanche—formerly a personal lawyer to President Donald Trump—told Maxwell the session offered limited immunity but did not constitute a cooperation deal. C-SPAN will broadcast the nine-hour recording in full. In the interview, Maxwell said no “client list” or blackmail scheme existed, insisted she never observed Trump, former President Bill Clinton or other prominent figures behave inappropriately and branded claims that Epstein worked for intelligence agencies “bullshit.” She added she does not believe Epstein died by suicide, suggesting instead he may have been killed by another inmate. Alongside the audio and transcript, the department delivered roughly 33,000 pages of Epstein-related material to the House Oversight Committee, although lawmakers said the production fell short of their subpoena and vowed further scrutiny. Victim advocates also questioned the credibility of relying on Maxwell, whom prosecutors have previously accused of perjury. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s team said additional files will be released once victim identities are protected. The partial disclosure aims to quell criticism that the Trump administration reneged on earlier promises to publish the full “Epstein files,” but congressional investigators signalled that their inquiry is far from over.
