The US Justice Department on Friday released redacted transcripts and accompanying audio from its prison interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The roughly 328-page record spans two days of questioning and was posted online after Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the disclosure “in the interest of transparency.” Blanche’s session with Maxwell was conducted on July 24 and 25 at the federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida, where she was then serving part of a 20-year sentence handed down in 2021 for trafficking minors for Epstein. The department also sent the material to the House Oversight Committee, which had subpoenaed Epstein-related files and is preparing a broader release. In the interview, Maxwell said she never saw President Donald Trump “in any inappropriate setting,” called him “kind” and “cordial,” and asserted that neither Trump, former President Bill Clinton nor other high-profile acquaintances engaged in criminal conduct with Epstein. She denied the existence of a so-called “client list” or any blackmail operation and offered no new allegations implicating third parties. Maxwell received limited immunity for the interview, meaning her statements cannot be used against her unless she lies; Blanche stressed that the meeting was “not a cooperation agreement.” The publication follows criticism that the Trump administration had stalled on releasing Epstein files and comes as lawmakers and victims’ advocates push for fuller transparency regarding the long-running sex-trafficking case.
