President Donald Trump’s emergency takeover of law-enforcement operations in Washington, D.C., has led to more than 400 arrests in its first week, Attorney General Pam Bondi said. The latest tally includes 68 suspects detained on Saturday night and 69 on Sunday, along with the seizure of 21 illegal firearms. More than 1,600 federal agents and National Guard troops are patrolling the capital under the 30-day initiative that began on Aug. 11. Preliminary figures released by the D.C. Police Union show sharp week-over-week declines in key offences, including an 83% fall in carjackings, a 46% drop in robberies and a 22% reduction in overall violent crime. Mississippi on Monday joined West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio in sending additional Guard units, pledging about 200 soldiers and bringing expected reinforcements to roughly 1,300 on top of the 800 troops already on the ground. Vermont’s governor has declined a similar request. District officials are challenging the federal intervention. The city sued after Bondi appointed Drug Enforcement Administration chief Terry Cole as an “emergency police commissioner.” A federal judge temporarily blocked that provision while allowing wider federal control to proceed. Mayor Muriel Bowser said deploying troops for policing is “un-American” and warned about masked officers operating in city streets. Supporters, including former Vice President Mike Pence, say the crackdown fulfils Trump’s pledge to make the capital safer and could become a model for other cities. Bondi has sent letters to 32 so-called sanctuary jurisdictions, warning that similar federal actions and cuts to funding may follow if they refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement.
