West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said Saturday he will deploy between 300 and 400 members of his state’s National Guard, along with equipment and specialized training, to Washington at the request of the Trump administration. The mission will be federally funded and is described by Morrisey as supporting the president’s push to make the capital “safe and beautiful.” Hours later, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster authorized 200 Guard troops and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine approved 150 military police for the same operation, bringing the reinforcements pledged by the three Republican-led states to roughly 750 soldiers. They will augment about 800 D.C. National Guard members that President Donald Trump activated earlier in the week as part of a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness and a partial takeover of local policing powers. Separately, the Wall Street Journal, NBC News and other outlets reported that some National Guard units already on the ground have been told to expect orders to carry firearms—reversing earlier guidance that the troops would remain unarmed. A White House spokesperson confirmed Guard members "may be armed" to protect federal assets and support law-enforcement operations but said they will not conduct arrests. The deployment has drawn sharp criticism from Washington officials, who have mounted legal challenges to the administration’s broader intervention in city policing.
