Newly appointed U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. Jeanine Pirro called on Monday for sweeping changes to the city’s juvenile-justice statutes, arguing that current rules prevent federal prosecutors from pursuing most violent crimes committed by people under 18. Pirro said her office can take a case only when a minor is charged with murder, first-degree robbery or rape. “Even if they shoot a gun, I can’t get it,” she told reporters, contending that the District’s reliance on family court and no-cash-bail policies has emboldened offenders. She urged the D.C. Council to allow juveniles who commit serious assaults and gun crimes to be tried as adults and vowed to lobby Congress if local lawmakers do not act. Pirro added that President Donald Trump supports the effort, saying the administration is prepared to “change the law to catch” repeat offenders amid heightened concern over violent crime in the capital.
