Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday said the state has already ended taxpayer support for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service, highlighting a line-item veto he issued last month. “Done in Florida,” he wrote after President Donald Trump urged Republicans in Congress to remove federal funding for the outlets. DeSantis’s veto struck nearly $5.8 million from Florida’s fiscal 2025-26 spending plan, including about $1.3 million in recurring base appropriations for public radio stations and more than $4.4 million earmarked for public television outlets. Previous years’ renovation grants were also cut. The governor’s stance aligns Florida with Trump’s call for Senate Republicans to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through a pending rescissions package. Trump warned he would withhold endorsements from party members who vote to keep the subsidy, which totals roughly $1 billion nationwide. Supporters of the move say taxpayers should not underwrite broadcasters they view as partisan, while Democratic lawmakers and media-advocacy groups argue the reductions will curb access to local news and educational programming. Florida’s stations can still seek private donations but must now operate without state aid.
