White House border czar Tom Homan said federal immigration agents will intensify enforcement operations in New York City, dismissing Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s pledge to block U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from conducting deportations. “Good luck with that,” Homan told reporters on 7 July, adding that ICE will “double down, triple down” on sanctuary jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal authorities. Homan argued that cities refusing to honor ICE detainers are “releasing public-safety and national-security threats” and warned that agents will “flood the zone” by carrying out arrests in communities and work sites if local jails decline to transfer detainees. He emphasised that federal immigration law supersedes municipal directives and said the agency will deploy additional teams to New York regardless of who wins November’s mayoral election. The planned escalation comes as President Donald Trump widens a nationwide crackdown on sanctuary policies. The recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill Act earmarks billions of dollars for immigration enforcement, allowing ICE to hire roughly 10,000 new agents and expand detention capacity. Homan said the infusion of resources will help the agency meet its internal target of detaining up to 7,000 migrants daily, underscoring the administration’s resolve to confront local resistance in New York and other major cities.
Zohran Mamdani says he’ll block ICE if he becomes mayor. Tom Homan’s response? “Keep dreaming, Zohran.” Sanctuary city or not, ICE is gearing up to storm NYC anyway — and Zohran won’t stop a thing. This isn’t a debate, it’s a warning. What should @RealTomHoman do if ICE is https://t.co/X5f6UFA4OX
