The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Monday subpoenaed the estate of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, demanding unredacted documents, video surveillance, financial records and other materials—including a leather-bound “birthday book” compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell—for delivery by 8 September. Chairman James Comer said the records are central to lawmakers’ examination of whether federal investigators mishandled earlier probes into Epstein and Maxwell and to their broader review of federal efforts to combat sex trafficking. Comer also disclosed that Alexander Acosta, the former U.S. attorney who approved Epstein’s controversial 2008 non-prosecution agreement and later served as secretary of labor, will appear for a transcribed interview on 19 September. The committee is separately accepting sworn written statements from former attorneys general Alberto Gonzales, Eric Holder and Jeff Sessions after the three indicated they have no relevant information. The moves expand a bipartisan investigation that has already prompted the Justice Department to begin turning over tens of thousands of pages of files, which lawmakers say are largely public or heavily redacted. By seeking documents directly from the Epstein estate, the committee hopes to fill gaps it says remain in the public record, including full contact logs and potential client lists. Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence following her 2021 conviction for helping recruit underage girls. Comer said the panel will weigh legislative changes aimed at strengthening oversight of sex-trafficking investigations and improving protections for victims.
Despite a month away from the Capitol, the recess has done little to lessen lawmakers’ interest in unveiling more about the Epstein case. https://t.co/wZFPPr3Q8o
