The U.S. House of Representatives voted 372–0 to approve the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge Act, which permanently renames the 39,000-acre Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge on the Texas Gulf Coast in honor of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. Fifty-nine lawmakers did not vote. Nungaray was sexually assaulted and killed in Houston in June 2024; two Venezuelan nationals face murder charges. Lawmakers said the designation reflects the girl’s passion for wildlife while ensuring her memory remains tied to the coastal sanctuary, a key stopover for migratory birds. The bipartisan bill, authored in the Senate by Texas Republicans Ted Cruz and John Cornyn and carried in the House by Rep. Brian Babin, would codify a March executive order from President Donald Trump that already changed the site’s name. The measure now heads to the White House for Trump’s signature, which would make the renaming immune to reversal by future administrations.

Jocelyn Nungaray should be alive today, laughing with friends, chasing her dreams. But she’s not. She was murdered by two violent criminals who shouldn’t have been in our country to begin with. No family should have to endure such a tragic loss. I voted yes on Sen. Cornyn’s https://t.co/ifJwkooONe
