The U.S. Supreme Court is concluding its 2024-2025 term with more than 30 decisions expected before early July. The Court's docket includes cases on birthright citizenship, gender and sexuality instruction in schools, gun manufacturer liability, gender-affirming care for minors, and age verification for online pornography. In Trump v. CASA Inc., the Court is reviewing President Donald Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship for children born to certain non-citizens. Lower courts blocked the order, and the Supreme Court is considering the legality of nationwide injunctions and the constitutional scope of birthright citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment. United States v. Skrmetti examines whether Tennessee's law banning gender-affirming medical care for minors violates the Equal Protection Clause. The decision could impact similar laws in Tennessee and Kentucky and influence transgender rights nationwide. Mahmoud v. Taylor addresses whether Maryland public schools must allow parents to opt their children out of curriculum involving LGBTQ themes on religious grounds. The outcome could affect parental rights and religious liberty in public education. In Smith & Wesson Brands v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos, the Court will decide if U.S. gun manufacturers can be held liable for violence in Mexico involving firearms trafficked from the United States, testing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. Other cases involve Texas' law requiring age verification for pornography websites, the legality of Louisiana's new congressional voting map in Louisiana v. Callais, Planned Parenthood Medicaid funding, and a challenge to Obamacare's preventive care requirements. The Court is also handling an unusually high number of emergency requests from the Trump administration, which may extend its work into July. The Court currently has a 6-3 conservative majority.
