President Donald Trump said late Friday that the United States will open discussions with Chinese officials as early as Monday or Tuesday to secure Beijing’s approval for a sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump added that Washington "pretty much" has a deal in place and may speak directly with President Xi Jinping or his representatives. The prospective transaction would transfer control of the short-video app’s U.S. business to American investors, satisfying a 2024 law that requires TikTok’s China-based parent, ByteDance, to divest the assets or face a nationwide ban. A similar plan was shelved this spring after China signaled it would not sign off amid heightened U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. Last month the White House extended the divestiture deadline to September 17, giving negotiators additional time to finalize terms. Trump said the agreement would be "good for China and good for us" but acknowledged that Chinese approval is still uncertain.
