Northwood Space, co-founded by Harvard Law graduate and former actress Bridgit Mendler, known for her role as Teddy in 'Good Luck Charlie', has secured a $30 million Series A funding round. The investment, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Founders Fund, will support the company's mission to revolutionize earth-to-space communication by developing a global ground station network. The funding will facilitate the expansion of Northwood Space's operations and manufacturing capabilities in the United States. The company plans to produce software-defined phased array antennas in a 3,252-square-meter facility in Torrance, California, and aims to establish a network of ground stations across six continents by the end of 2026. Northwood Space has already demonstrated its prototype phase-array antenna by successfully connecting with a Planet Earth-observation satellite. Mendler, who discussed the funding round on Bloomberg Technology, highlighted the capital intensity of the space industry and the critical role of ground infrastructure in enabling continuous communication with satellites. The company plans to deploy two sites per month, each capable of offering backhaul capacity up to 100 gigabits per second. Northwood Space previously raised $6 million in a seed round to design, build, deploy, and test its phased-array antenna prototype.
