Venezuela’s diplomatic corps held a series of meetings in Caracas on 26 August aimed at broadening international support as it confronts what it calls heightened U.S. military pressure in the Caribbean. Foreign Minister Yván Gil met with United Nations resident coordinator Gianluca Rampolla to reinforce bilateral cooperation and formally express concern over the deployment of the U.S. fast-attack submarine USS Newport News in regional waters, which Caracas describes as a threat to regional peace and a breach of the 1967 Treaty of Tlatelolco. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez separately received Indian Ambassador P.K. Ashok Babu to review an expanded cooperation agenda that includes energy, science and technology, finance, transportation and environmental projects. Both officials said the talks are intended to deepen strategic ties between Caracas and New Delhi amid continued U.S. sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector. Earlier in the day, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a call with Gil to reiterate Tehran’s backing of Venezuela’s sovereignty. The string of engagements underscores President Nicolás Maduro’s strategy of rallying multilateral and South-South partners as the country advances its ‘Diplomacia Bolivariana de Paz’ platform.
