On July 2, 2025, the ferry KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank in the Bali Strait near Indonesia, shortly after departing from Ketapang port in East Java. The vessel was carrying 65 people. Rescue operations initially found 31 survivors, while six people were confirmed dead, including Eko Sastrio, a 51-year-old truck driver, and his son Eka Toniansah, a truck assistant. Search and rescue teams, including navy ships, helicopters, and divers, have been conducting extensive operations to locate the remaining missing passengers. The search area was expanded southward, and the ferry's wreck was identified underwater approximately 3.6 kilometers from an undersea cable route. As of mid-July, the death toll rose to seven, with 28 people still missing. Indonesian authorities have scaled down the search for the remaining missing persons. Separately, on July 15, a speedboat capsized in the Mentawai Islands near Sumatra while carrying 18 people, including 10 local government officials. After swimming for hours in rough conditions, all 11 initially reported missing were found alive, with seven reaching a fishing hamlet to seek help. The survivors were rescued following the incident caused by a sudden storm.
