Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday marked the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, Europe’s worst mass killing since World War II, with a day-long commemoration at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery. Relatives and mourners buried the partial remains of seven newly identified victims, bringing the number of people interred at the site to about 6,772. Thousands of survivors, dignitaries and foreign officials observed a collective Islamic prayer before the coffins, draped in green cloth and Bosnian flags, were carried to their graves. The ceremonies recalled events of 11–16 July 1995, when Bosnian Serb forces overran the United Nations-declared “safe area” of Srebrenica and executed more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys. The massacre, later ruled genocide by international courts, unfolded in full view of Dutch UN peacekeepers who were unable to halt the assault. Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladić and political leader Radovan Karadžić are serving life sentences for their roles. Commemorations opened with a three-day, 100-kilometre peace march retracing the route some Bosniaks used to flee the death squads in 1995. European Council President Antonio Costa, alongside local religious leaders and diplomats, laid wreaths and urged vigilance against hatred. Britain’s King Charles sent a message stressing the international community’s duty to acknowledge its failure to prevent the atrocity. Despite the convictions, roughly 1,000 victims remain unaccounted for, and families often choose to bury even a single bone to secure a final resting place. The United Nations General Assembly last year designated 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica, but denial of the crime by some Serb officials persists, underscoring the obstacles that continue to hinder post-war reconciliation and Bosnia’s path toward EU integration.
