Sudan's Sovereign Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has approved a United Nations proposal for a one-week humanitarian ceasefire in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, to facilitate UN aid efforts. The ceasefire was agreed upon following a call between al-Burhan and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. While the Sudanese military has accepted the ceasefire, the response from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of critical funding shortages that threaten to drastically reduce food aid for millions of Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, and the Central African Republic. Without urgent new funding, WFP assistance to the most vulnerable refugees could be suspended by August, with food supplies potentially running out within two months. The UN has also highlighted increasing pressure on resources in northern Sudan due to the influx of displaced persons and has warned of imminent flooding that could further hinder aid delivery. Humanitarian agencies continue to call on the international community to sustain support amid escalating violence and worsening conditions for displaced populations.
