Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), backed by the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Khalifa Haftar and supported by the United Arab Emirates, have seized control of a strategic border area known as the El-Uweinat Triangle, located at the intersection of Sudan, Libya, and Egypt. This zone is a critical trade and smuggling nexus that enables the RSF to resupply arms and fighters from the west. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) withdrew from this area following clashes, marking a notable shift in the ongoing conflict that has lasted over two years between the RSF and the Sudanese military. The RSF has stated its intention to use control of this border region to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery to Sudanese states Darfur and Kordofan. The SAF has placed the northern border near Egypt on high alert amid these developments, which have heightened regional security concerns, especially for Egypt. The conflict's regionalization is underscored by the involvement of foreign actors and the RSF's recent announcement of a parallel government coalition in the RSF-controlled city of Nyala in South Darfur. This move has deepened political instability in Sudan, which remains divided with the army controlling the north, east, and center, including the capital Khartoum, while the RSF holds most of Darfur and parts of Kordofan. The Arab League has rejected the formation of any parallel governments outside Sudan's constitutional framework, viewing it as a challenge to the will of the Sudanese people and an attempt to impose a fait accompli through armed force. Analysts warn that these developments risk pushing Sudan closer to fragmentation and regional spillover of the conflict.
