Sudan is experiencing a severe cholera epidemic that has resulted in over 101,000 confirmed cases and 2,515 deaths since the outbreak began in August 2024. The crisis is particularly acute in Darfur's overcrowded displacement camps, where violence, water shortages, and attacks on health facilities have exacerbated the situation. South Darfur alone has reported more than half of the cases in the region, with 7,780 infections and 330 deaths. The Sudanese Health Ministry recorded 1,575 new cases and 22 deaths in the past week. The outbreak affects 18 states across Sudan, with 38% of health facilities out of service and 177 attacks on health infrastructure since April 2023, according to the World Health Organization. The ongoing conflict involving the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has contributed to displacement, flooding, and destruction of health services, complicating response efforts that include mass vaccination campaigns, provision of safe water, and medical support from organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). In neighboring South Sudan, the cholera outbreak has reached critical levels, with over 40,000 children affected, including 20,000 under the age of five. Additionally, malnutrition remains a pressing issue in Sudan, with 46 deaths reported in South Kordofan over two months and nearly 19,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women in urgent need of nutrition. Chad has also reported a cholera epidemic with 642 cases and 39 deaths in the Ouaddaï region. The United Nations has warned of a potential catastrophe in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, if the outbreak is not contained.
