President Donald Trump said Monday he will telephone Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately after concluding talks in Washington with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and visiting European leaders. “He’s expecting my call when we’re finished with this meeting,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that he had already spoken with Putin “indirectly” earlier in the day. Trump added that, if the call goes well, he will seek to arrange a three-way summit involving the United States, Ukraine and Russia. “If we have a trilat, there’s a good chance of maybe ending it,” he said, referring to the war that began with Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The president did not specify a timeframe or venue for the proposed gathering, nor did he outline preconditions for the talks. Zelenskyy and several European leaders were at the White House for consultations on security guarantees for Kyiv and broader efforts to halt the conflict. While Trump cautioned that a trilateral meeting is not yet confirmed, the prospect marks the most direct indication to date that Washington, Moscow and Kyiv could sit at the same table to explore a negotiated settlement.
