President Donald Trump warned he is prepared to unleash what he called an “economic war” against Russia unless President Vladimir Putin agrees within the next two weeks to engage in cease-fire talks with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Speaking at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump said the consequences he is considering are “very serious,” stressing that they would damage Russia’s economy rather than escalate into a broader military conflict. Trump has repeatedly threatened tighter sanctions on Moscow and on nations that help finance the war through purchases of Russian oil. The White House has already doubled a tariff to 50% on Indian imports connected to Russian crude and is weighing further measures. The ultimatum follows a Trump-Putin summit held Aug. 15 in Anchorage that was billed as a potential breakthrough, yet no meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy has been scheduled. Trump said he would reassess the situation in one to two weeks before deciding on additional steps.
