First Lady Melania Trump spent Thursday at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., meeting with about a dozen young patients ahead of the Independence Day holiday. The visit included an arts-and-crafts session where she helped children decorate rocks and assemble patriotic ornaments for the hospital’s Bunny Mellon Healing Garden. Trump brought teddy bears and additional gifts for each child, telling them, “Look! We have surprises for you.” Joined by hospital president and chief executive Michelle Riley-Brown, she planted miniature American flags and Fourth-of-July wind propellers in the garden and presented a new yellow tea rose, dubbed the “Eternal Flame,” to the facility. The appearance continues a long-standing tradition of U.S. first ladies visiting the pediatric center; Trump is the eighth to preside over the garden area inaugurated in 2017. She also stopped by the transplant, heart and kidney units before leaving, according to hospital officials.
