xAI has released Grok Code Fast 1, its first large-language model tailored specifically for software development. The new system is a variant of the company’s flagship Grok 4 model and is designed to deliver faster code generation and stronger reasoning for programmers. Developers can try the model free for roughly a week on several third-party tools, including Windsurf, Cursor, Opencode, Kilo Code, OpenRouterAI and CodeLLM’s command-line interface. xAI said usage data collected during the promotion will inform further tuning of the system. Once the introductory period ends, Grok Code Fast 1 will be priced at $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.50 per million output tokens. Early benchmarks published by hosting partners show the model generating text at about 92 tokens per second, while undercutting the input-token price of xAI’s earlier Grok 3 Mini model. The launch confirms developer speculation that an experimental model known internally as “Sonic” was an early version of Grok Code Fast 1. The release expands xAI’s portfolio, which now spans conversational AI, image generation and specialised code-writing systems.
