Elon Musk's AI startup xAI has open-sourced several versions of its Grok AI models, making them freely available on the open-source platform Hugging Face. The company released Grok 2, a large 500GB model originally launched in August 2024, followed by Grok 2.5, which Musk confirmed as their best model from last year. Grok 3 is planned to be open-sourced in approximately six months. These releases align with Musk's earlier promise to open-source discontinued models. Additionally, xAI introduced Grok Code Fast 1, a coding-optimized variant of Grok 4, which is now available for free use in platforms such as Windsurf, Cursor, and Kilo Code. Grok Code Fast 1 offers fast performance at a cost of $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.50 per million output tokens, with speeds reaching 92 tokens per second. Grok Imagine, another xAI product, continues to receive updates and is expected to be available on the web soon. Musk has positioned xAI to compete with major AI players like Google, noting that Chinese firms represent strong competition due to their hardware and electricity advantages. The open-sourcing of Grok models is seen as a strategic move to foster innovation and community development within the AI ecosystem.
