At Google I/O 2025, Google officially unveiled the second Developer Preview of Android XR, its new extended reality platform designed to support open, cross-device AR and VR development. Android XR features an open, modular architecture, native support for OpenXR and WebXR, 180° native support, and integration with Gemini AI, aiming to provide a flexible and intelligent foundation for immersive technology. The platform will be implemented through partnerships with hardware manufacturers such as Samsung and Xreal for display-based devices, and with fashion brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster for non-display smart glasses. Google's Project Moohan, developed with Samsung and Qualcomm, is positioned as a mixed reality headset with video passthrough capabilities, targeting a segment between Apple's Vision Pro and Meta's Quest 3 in terms of price and functionality. The Samsung prototype features a monocular heads-up display, while Xreal's Project Aura is also part of the initial lineup. Android XR's device classes include video passthrough headsets, flat AR display glasses, and non-display AI smart glasses. The platform is designed to allow enterprises and developers to build immersive experiences using familiar Android tools, emphasizing compatibility, scalability, and the absence of walled gardens. The integration of Gemini AI is highlighted as a key differentiator, enabling features such as world annotation, object recognition, and multimodal AI interactions. Google's approach focuses on software and AI, with hardware production delegated to partners, in contrast to vertically integrated competitors like Apple and Meta. In related developments, new smart glasses such as Even Realities' G1, endorsed by Palmer Luckey, offer gesture control, prescription-ready lenses, and five-day battery life. Wearable tech was further highlighted when Luckey used the Even Realities G1 glasses to discreetly display notes during a TED talk.
