Meta Platforms plans to debut its first consumer-ready smart glasses with an integrated display at the Meta Connect conference on 17–18 September, according to people familiar with the matter and company statements. The glasses—internally codenamed “Hypernova” and also referred to as “Celeste”—embed a small color screen in the right lens to show notifications and simple applications. Retailing for about $800, the device undercuts earlier price estimates of up to $1,400 after Meta opted to accept slimmer margins to broaden adoption. It will ship with a wristband that reads electrical signals in the wearer’s forearm, allowing hand-gesture control, and is being produced in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the maker of Ray-Ban. The launch marks Meta’s most significant step beyond its voice-only Ray-Ban Stories line and comes as rivals, including Apple and Samsung, ready competing wearables. Meta has sold about two million pairs of its second-generation Ray-Ban glasses since 2023, according to EssilorLuxottica. Separately, Meta’s chief AI officer said the company has formed a partnership with generative-image startup Midjourney, and people familiar with the matter said discussions have included a potential acquisition. Meta intends to integrate Midjourney’s technology into future hardware and AI models, potentially enhancing visual features on forthcoming devices such as Hypernova.
