#BREAKING 🚨 Brodie Palmer and Jack Brearley have been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Indigenous schoolboy Cassius Turvey Turvey, 15, was chased down and attacked with a metal pole while walking with friends after school in Perth in 2022 https://t.co/58nhT2bS9y
The Western Australia Supreme Court has imposed life sentences on Jack Steven James Brearley, 24, and Brodie Lee Palmer, 30, for the 2022 murder of Aboriginal schoolboy Cassius Turvey. Brearley will first be eligible for parole in October 2044 and Palmer in January 2041. A third man, Mitchell Colin Forth, 27, was jailed for 12 years for manslaughter and related assaults, with parole possible in January 2033. Chief Justice Peter Quinlan said the attackers “robbed Cassius Turvey of his life and of his promise” in an act of “aggression, violence and brutality.” The court heard Brearley struck the 15-year-old with a metal pole after chasing him into bushland in Perth’s eastern suburbs on 13 October 2022, while Palmer and Forth aided the attack. Quinlan noted the use of racial slurs during the assault, acknowledging community fears that the killing was racially motivated. Cassius Turvey, described by family and teachers as a promising community leader, died in hospital 10 days after the assault. The sentences follow a 12-week trial that concluded with guilty verdicts in May and bring a high-profile case that shocked Australia’s Indigenous communities closer to closure.
