Rivian is replacing the Mapbox-based mapping system in its electric pickups and sport-utility vehicles with a customized version of Google Maps, the companies said on 15 July. The software update, built on Google’s Automotive SDK, is rolling out immediately to all Rivian vehicles and the companion mobile app. The integration supplies drivers with Google’s routing, real-time traffic, estimated arrival times, satellite imagery and place information while retaining Rivian’s EV-specific tools such as range-on-arrival forecasts, charging-stop planning and the company’s ‘Charging Score’ ratings for public stations. Points of interest can now be tapped directly on the in-car display to pull up hours, reviews and contact details. Rivian and Google engineers spent 18 months co-developing the system, which preserves Rivian’s user interface and design language but grants deeper API-level access to Google Maps data than typical Android Automotive implementations. The update is being delivered over the air at no additional cost; some advanced features, including satellite view in the mobile app, require Rivian’s Connect+ subscription.
