Uber Technologies will invest $300 million in electric-vehicle maker Lucid Group and purchase at least 20,000 of its forthcoming Gravity sport-utility vehicles to build a premium autonomous ride-hailing fleet, the companies said on Thursday. The battery-powered SUVs will be factory-equipped with Nuro’s Level-4 “Nuro Driver” self-driving system and operate exclusively on the Uber platform. A prototype is already running on a closed course at Nuro’s Las Vegas test site, and commercial service is slated to begin in a yet-to-be-named major U.S. city late in 2026. Uber intends to roll out the vehicles over a six-year period, either through its own fleet or third-party operators. Uber also plans a separate multi-hundred-million-dollar investment in Nuro, extending the ride-hailing company’s renewed push into autonomous mobility after it shut its in-house unit in 2020. The partnership follows recent AV deals with Waymo and Volkswagen and positions the trio to compete with Tesla and other robotaxi pioneers. Lucid shares jumped as much as 60 % on the announcement; the EV maker separately filed for a 1-for-10 reverse stock split.
