Bangladesh on Tuesday opened a month-long series of events to mark the first anniversary of last year’s July–August Mass Uprising, when nationwide student-led protests left scores dead and ultimately forced the previous administration to resign. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus inaugurated the "July Remembrance Programmes" at his office in Dhaka, outlining commemorative activities scheduled through 5 August. The student wing of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, led dawn ceremonies at the Central Shaheed Minar, lighting thousands of candles and singing the national anthem in memory of what it says were more than 100 activists killed during the 2024 demonstrations. Parallel vigils and anthem recitals were held in Jashore, Khulna and at Barishal University under the theme "Aloy Aloy Smriti Samujjwal" (Memories Aglow in Light). Organisers said the programme includes discussions, exhibitions, blood-donation drives and human chains intended to highlight demands for greater political freedoms and an end to discrimination. The interim government endorsed the events, signalling rare convergence with opposition-aligned student groups on honouring those who died in last year’s uprising.
