Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Belarus had released several detainees following diplomatic engagement by his representatives and expressed hope that the country’s remaining political prisoners would soon be freed. In a social-media post, Trump thanked the “powerful leader” of Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko, for cooperating with what he described as a U.S. effort to secure the prisoners’ freedom. Trump claimed that a June 21 meeting in Minsk between Lukashenko and his special envoy, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, resulted in the immediate release of 14 political prisoners, with another 16 reportedly freed soon afterward. Human-rights groups estimate that about 1,300 political prisoners remain in Belarus, detained largely in the aftermath of the country’s disputed 2020 presidential election. Belarusian authorities have not confirmed the figures cited by Trump or commented publicly on additional releases.
