A rally convened by former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro on São Paulo’s Avenida Paulista on 29 June drew an estimated 12,400 participants, according to the University of São Paulo’s Monitor do Debate Político. The crowd size was roughly one-third of the 44,900 people that attended a similar demonstration in April and the smallest since Bolsonaro left office in 2022, underscoring a waning capacity to mobilise supporters. Speaking from a sound truck, Bolsonaro urged the right to secure “50 percent of the Chamber and the Senate” in next year’s elections, arguing that congressional control would allow conservatives to reshape the country and curb the Supreme Court, which is weighing charges against him over the 8 January 2023 riot. The gathering repeated calls for amnesty for those jailed over the riot and for the removal of the governing Workers’ Party, chanting “Fora, PT”. São Paulo governor Tarcísio de Freitas, viewed as a potential presidential contender in 2026 should Bolsonaro remain barred from office, praised the former president as “the greatest political leader in history” and declared that “Brazil can no longer stand the PT”. Yet prominent conservatives such as city councillor Janaína Paschoal warned that the reduced turnout showed fatigue with Bolsonaro’s constant street politics and urged him to adopt a more selective public agenda ahead of the electoral cycle.
