Mauro Cid, a key figure in the investigation of the alleged 2022 coup attempt in Brazil, was initially arrested but subsequently released by the Supreme Federal Court (STF). He has provided multiple depositions to both the Federal Police and the STF, reaffirming accusations that Filipe Martins was responsible for drafting the coup plan and that former President Jair Bolsonaro requested changes to the document. The STF has denied requests to call Carlos and Eduardo Bolsonaro as witnesses in the case. Meanwhile, the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, was excused from testifying, citing no connection to the investigation. The STF is also hearing testimonies from other witnesses related to the so-called "nucleus 2" of the inquiry. In parallel, the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police launched extensive operations targeting organized crime, including the largest action against cellphone theft and resale, resulting in over 100 arrests and recovery of more than 1,400 stolen phones. Additional operations targeted cybercrime rings involved in bank account invasions and scams involving fraudulent loans to the elderly. These efforts included the launch of the "Celular Seguro RJ" app to aid in combating mobile phone-related crimes. Authorities also conducted operations against cargo theft and counterfeit currency distribution. The investigations and law enforcement actions highlight ongoing efforts to address both political and criminal challenges in Brazil.
