The Ethics and Decorum Council of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies voted 16–3 on Tuesday, 15 July, to suspend the mandate of Deputy André Janones (Avante-MG) for 90 days. The decision, proposed by rapporteur Fausto Santos Jr. (União-AM), reduced a six-month penalty requested by the chamber’s board and takes effect immediately. Janones was found to have breached parliamentary decorum by directing offensive and allegedly homophobic remarks at Deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) during a 9 July plenary session. The outburst triggered a scuffle on the floor, prompting intervention by chamber security and an expedited disciplinary process introduced last year to curb disorderly conduct. During the three-month suspension, Janones will forfeit his gross salary of roughly R$46,600 a month, lose access to staff and office resources, and be barred from voting or speaking in congressional proceedings. The council’s ruling is provisional; the deputy has already said he will appeal to the full 513-member plenary, which can uphold, amend or overturn the penalty. The case underscores heightened tensions between allies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the right-wing bloc led by former President Jair Bolsonaro. It is the second time this year the council has invoked a fast-track procedure, following the May suspension of Gilvan da Federal (PL-ES) for comments against a government minister.
