Brazilian publicist Juliana Marins, 26, died after slipping from a trail on Mount Rinjani, a volcano on the Indonesian island of Lombok, on 21 June. A four-day search hampered by fog and steep terrain located her body on 24 June. An initial autopsy performed in Bali cited multiple fractures and internal bleeding and concluded that she succumbed within 20 minutes of the trauma, ruling out hypothermia. Marins’ remains arrived in Rio de Janeiro on 1 July aboard a Brazilian Air Force flight. A second autopsy was conducted the following day at the Instituto Médico Legal Afrânio Peixoto, overseen by state and federal forensic experts as well as a physician engaged by the family. The preliminary report, expected within a week, will examine toxicology results and attempt to pinpoint the exact time of death. The family held a public wake and subsequently buried Marins on 4 July in Niterói after abandoning earlier plans for cremation so the body could be exhumed if required. Speaking at the service, her father, Manoel Marins, criticised what he called delayed and under-equipped rescue efforts and said the family is considering legal action against Indonesian authorities and the tour operator. He urged Jakarta to tighten safety and emergency protocols on the popular Rinjani trekking route to prevent further fatalities.
