The Niterói municipal government on Tuesday unveiled a commemorative plaque at the Mirante Juliana Marins, overlooking Praia do Sossego, to honour Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old local publicist who died last month while trekking on Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani. The ceremony began at 9 a.m. and was attended by relatives and friends of the victim, who described the seaside lookout as one of her favourite places in the city. Marins slipped and fell about 300 metres during a pre-dawn hike on 21 June, according to Indonesian rescue officials. She was located four days later but had succumbed to multiple fractures and internal injuries. Questions about the exact cause and timing of death led a Brazilian federal judge to authorise a second autopsy, performed on 2 July at the Rio de Janeiro medical examiner’s office, with representatives of the Civil Police, Federal Police and the family present. Niterói City Hall contributed R$55,000 to cover the costs of repatriating Marins’s remains, which arrived in Brazil on 1 July aboard an Air Force flight. She was buried on 4 July at the Parque da Colina cemetery. The plaque states that Marins “loved Niterói and wanted to discover the world” and calls her memory “a sign of respect for what is beautiful.”
