Brazil's Vice President and Minister of Development, Commerce and Industry, Geraldo Alckmin, is leading efforts to respond to the 50% tariff imposed by the United States on Brazilian imports. Since mid-July 2025, Alckmin has held multiple meetings with representatives from the industrial and agricultural sectors, trade unions, and political leaders including Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco and Chamber of Deputies President Arthur Lira. The Brazilian government sent a formal letter to U.S. trade authorities expressing indignation over the tariff hike but emphasized readiness to engage in dialogue to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution. Alckmin has also sought to extend the negotiation deadline with the U.S. and highlighted cooperation between Brazil's industry and government in addressing the issue. According to Alckmin, approximately 35.9% of Brazil's exports to the U.S. will face the 50% tariff, while around 44.6% of exports have been excluded from this top rate and instead face a 10% tariff, with the remaining 19.5% subject to global rates ranging from 25% to 50%. He described the tariffs as a "lose-lose situation" that will lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. Alckmin also pointed out efforts to negotiate a reduction in U.S. tariffs on Brazilian coffee, noting that the U.S. does not produce coffee, and indicated Brazil may seek alternative markets if negotiations do not progress. The Brazilian government aims to resolve the tariff dispute before August 2025.
