The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, including coffee and orange juice, effective from August 1, 2025. Brazil supplies about one-third of the coffee consumed in the U.S., the world's largest coffee consumer, and is also Florida's biggest international trading partner for orange juice. This tariff is expected to increase the prices of coffee and orange juice in the U.S., potentially raising the cost of breakfast items. In response, traders and importers are accelerating shipments of Brazilian coffee to the U.S. before the tariff takes effect. The tariff has caused orange juice prices to reach their highest levels since March 2025. Brazilian coffee exporters note that the impact of the tariff will be more pronounced on new contracts, prompting some in the specialty coffee sector to seek alternative markets such as China and the Middle East. The tariff has also affected the stock prices of Brazilian export companies. Given Brazil's dominant position in the U.S. coffee market, replacing its supply would be challenging.
