A live cross-network broadcast from Alumínio, in the interior of São Paulo, was interrupted on 1 July when Band reporter Lucas Martins shoved Record TV journalist Grace Abdou while both covered the search for two missing teenagers, Layla, 16, and Sofia, 13. Images aired simultaneously by Band’s “Brasil Urgente” and Record’s “Cidade Alerta” show Martins pushing and briefly pulling Abdou’s arm after complaining she blocked his camera shot, saying, “Dá licença, Grace, tá louca?”. Record TV issued a statement condemning what it called an “inacceptable act of aggression”, confirmed that Abdou has registered a police report and said the broadcaster will pursue all applicable legal measures. The incident has reignited debate over on-air conduct and competitive pressure among field reporters in Brazil’s crime-focused television programs. Martins returned to air later the same day to apologise, describing his behaviour as “lamentable” and “inexcusable”. While Band has yet to release a formal corporate statement, anchor Joel Datena defended his colleague’s character on air. Investigators will decide whether the shove constitutes assault under São Paulo state law, and any civil action will proceed independently of potential criminal charges.
